THE
STAGE SHOW PACKAGE AS PRESENTED TO KONCERT DIREKTION OF
GERMANY IN 1998 through the Dept of Trade and Industry, Scotland. These
were the days of Celtic Riverdances, Michael Flatley’s Celtic Shows ..
but as yet no-one had ever made shows about the Picts – who were living
in Scotland even before the Scots arrived. The
demo for Spring as presented can be heard on: http://www.myspace.com/electricthistle One
of the most unknown cultures in Western Europe, the Pictish legacy lives
on in the monuments and imagery of its peoples.
The Picts were the indigenous tribal people of what is today called
Scotland. The
foundations of tomorrow. The
themes used to celebrate this story use the sounds of the elements,
chants, and the instruments most celebrated on the Pictish stones; the
Bodhran, Pipes and Wood. The
pipe music used will be adapted from both older and contemporary and
original archives. Interwoven
into this 21st Century rebirth of the Pictish heritage and its ancient
musical themes are the most
modern technologies and idioms which provide the vital essence of tribal
beats and rhythms. The
imagery of the spectacular backdrops will be sourced from the archive
of the Pictish Arts Society [Scotland]. THE
MUSIC DEMO : THE STORY OF THE SHOW. Sun
and Moon represents a journey not only through the seasons of the year,
but also a journey through the cycle of a nation, Scotland ... the same
spirit in many guises and lifetimes. Demo
track 1 'SPRING' The
ambient beginnings at the dawn of time and the dawn of a people, the awakening
of hope, mystery and promise. A
strong, steady purpose develops from the stirring of the sight. Demo
track 2 'SUMMER' The
fulfilment of joy; and the spirit soars as the land blooms and our hearts
find a place in the glens by the stream. Demo
track 3 'AUTUMN' The
flowers of summer fade into autumn, but hope and the spirit take courage
for the coming struggle with the dark.
The cycle turns and history rings in the changes - but the dance
goes on in many guises and lifetimes; '....
and love is a twinkle that shines in each set, we
have danced and have loved and cannot forget, for
that is the way of the dancer ...' Demo
track 4 'WINTER' Times
of coldness and turmoil, give pause to reflect.
Winter is upon us, the tides of time ebb and flow upon the shores
of ancient Pictland, and the people dream of the victories to come. LIGHTING

MOTIF VISUALS The
main object of the dance routine, BESIDES RESPONDING TO THE MOODS OF THE
SEASONS, is for the dancers to collaborate to weave a tartan from long
'silk' strips. SPRING Dancers
in 2's come on with the foundation colour [earthy dark colour eg. brown]
but don't tie up into any symmetry. SUMMER Dancers
in 2's come on also with a smattering of gold strips, but don't give the
intent away. AUTUMN Green
strips and brown co-ordinate with the summer gold highlight OFF STAGE at
the moment, a bit of weave is starting. WINTER The
introduction of dark blue - and then, the summer gold highlight is
reprised and woven into the Tartan at the finale. SYMBOLISM
